GaiaPark is an exciting modern zoo, in which the animals live in spacious natural enclosures. It is also the first zoo with one central theme: the Gaia theory, which views the Earth as a living planet. : The name of the zoo therefore also pays homage to Gaia, the Greek goddess of the Earth, the ancient “Mother Earth” symbol, as well as having a modern vision of life on Earth. One important goal for GaiaPark is the conservation of nature and species.
All over the world, zoos work together to protect endangered animals from extinction. There are animal breeding programmes for hundreds of species in Europe alone, one of the more larger organisations is the European Endangered Species Programmes (EEPs). GaiaPark is home to 25 species of animals that fall within an EEP. GaiaPark is a fantastic day out for children and adults alike! At GaiaPark, the 'experience' is the central focus.
You will take a trip back in time, as well as a journey to far-off countries with exotic animals like gorillas, giraffes, cheetahs and even a wood with apes running around freely. You can choose from four different expeditions, each with its own exciting adventures and encounters.

Valkenburg - Burgruine en Fluweelengrot
Castle ruins The rich history of the Middle Ages lives again with a visit to the castle ruins in Valkenburg aan de Geul, and its history dating back to the 11th century! Towers jut skyward from the ruins of the once so imposing castle, the Netherlands' only hilltop castle, looking out over the little fortress town below.
Visiting these historic remains of Valkenburg Castle, you can wander from the Great Hall to the defensive towers, from the dungeon to the old chapel, and from the artillery room to the subterranean escape passages. Relive the stirring history of the many sieges, destructions and dominions of knights such as Walram de Rosse, Gosewijn, and the Dukes of Brabant, until the final destruction of the castle on 10 December 1672 at the hands of Stadtholder Willem III.
The remains of the castle ruins have stood as a quiet reminder of the proud fortress here at this prominent place in the Geul Valley ever since.
Discover the secrets of the Velvet Cave...! Nice and cool in the summer and wonderfully warm in the winter, the Velvet Cave is a permanent 12 degrees Celsius year-round... naturally! Visit the oldest cave (marlstone quarry excavation) in South Limburg...
Closely connected with the rich history of the castle ruin is the Velvet Cave, the network of passageways beneath the castle ruin. The Velvet Cave probably dates from the 11th or 12th century. Marl was mined from the cave by "block breakers" for use as a building stone in the construction of edifices like Valkenburg Castle. The result of this marlstone mining is an extensive labyrinth of old and rugged passageways.
In times of siege, the "secret passageways," which were only discovered in 1937, allowed the knights and their footmen to escape the castle and attack the enemy from behind or secretly bring supplies in.
One legend tells of the Brabanders (natives of Brabant) who, laying siege to Valkenburg, could not understand why celebrations were still being held inside the castle walls even after a long period of siege. Little did they know that the troops inside were being supplied via the secret passageways... from Brabant, where the siege armies would soon discover that their lands had been plundered in their absence!
The Velvet Cave has many secrets; discover a treasure trove of impressive wall murals, inscriptions, strange sculptures in the soft marlstone walls and a romantic chapel dating from the French period under Napoleon (18th century).
In the Second World War, during the German occupation, the cave served as a hideout for the people of Valkenburg and for the American troops. All these events have left their mark on this place, which we can still see today. Follow your guide's lamp (accompanied by a lost, lonely cave bat) and enjoy the legends, stories, deep darkness and serene silence.
Combining a visit to the castle ruin with a journey to the Velvet Cave is a unique experience!
The wellness centre at the top of the Cauberg, offers you an innovative and stylish sauna landscape.
Thermae 2OOO is also one of the few places in the Netherlands where you can experience and enjoy the refreshing, caring power of ultra-healthy water.
The source is what counts. The healing water originates from three ancient, thermal sources that were specially drilled for Thermae 2OOO.
A 'tour of the baths' is a treat in itself. The water is pleasantly warm, 32 degrees Celsius: it is just like stepping into the tropics. In the indoor and outdoor pools you can swim and relax in water that originates from sources 400 m deep and that have remained hidden under the chalk-rich Limburg soil for 40,000 years.
Over the centuries it has been constantly filtered clean and become rich in minerals. Fantastic for muscles and joints. Refreshing for body and soul. Moreover the many whirlpools, whirl benches and underwater jet massages provide additional relaxation for the neck, back or shoulders.
In the thermal baths you can daily choose from a varied programme of free activities:
• Thermae Motion: short relaxation exercises with light and underwater sound therapy.
• Thermae Vitality: an active gym session in the water.
• Floating: quietly float in the warm thermal water.
Saunas and steambaths
Thermae 2OOO offers different kind of sauna's which are described below.
Stuga sauna - This original Finnish outdoor sauna is fuelled with wood to a temperature of 95 degrees Celsius. The humidity is very low, which is experienced as highly pleasant.
Tuli sauna - This Finnish sauna has a temperature of 90 degrees Celsius. In the middle of the sauna is an open fire, also referred to as a Tuli. The atmosphere here is very peaceful!
Outdoor saunas - These two outdoor saunas are gas-heated up to a temperature of 90 degrees Celsius.
Eucalyptus sauna - A sauna with a revitalising eucalyptus fragrance and a temperature of about 70 degrees Celsius.
Standard saunas - Three 'ordinary' saunas with temperatures of 70, 80 and 90 degrees Celsius. The sauna where it is 80 degrees Celsius is used as a lady's sauna until 14.00 hours.
Turkish steam bath - A dome-shaped steam bath that is built with steps. The higher you sit the hotter it is. Moreover a pleasant eucalyptus fragrance hangs in the air.
Roman steam baths - Two steam baths with a fantastic fresh smell.
In a number of outdoor saunas you can enjoy the sauna experience more intensively. This is thanks to our special water pourings during which water and aromatic oils are poured onto the hot stones. As the evaporated water condenses on the cooler skin, the effect is even more intensive. Water pourings take place daily – completely free of charge – in one of the outdoor saunas. You are warmly invited.
